Lasik Surgery FAQs

If the thought of wearing prescription eyeglasses for the rest of your life to correct your vision doesn’t appeal to you, consider LASIK surgery. These FAQs from our eye doctor at Cape Fear Eye Associates PA explain more about LASIK and what to expect from this treatment.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a surgical procedure designed to correct refractive errors in your vision so you can have better sight. Problems with myopia, nearsightedness, and astigmatism stem from the shape of the cornea of your eye. LASIK surgery uses a laser to reshape the cornea of your eye to correct refractions and improve your sight.

Who qualifies for LASIK surgery?

LASIK candidates must be 18 years or older, be in good general health, have good eye health, and have a stable prescription for a year or more to qualify for LASIK surgery. Health issues like autoimmune diseases can hinder healing after surgery, making you a poor candidate for this procedure. If you have eye health issues like cataracts, these can impact the outcome of the surgery. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also poor candidates for LASIK, as hormonal changes during this stage of their lives alter eye shape and prescription. Once their baby is weaned, however, they may qualify for LASIK treatment.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for LASIK?

A visit to our Fayetteville eye doctor will determine if you’re a good fit for LASIK. We’ll review your medical history, test your vision, and check your eye health to see if you meet the qualifications for this treatment. We’ll also explain the procedure in detail to give you a clear picture of what you can expect from this treatment.

Is LASIK painful?

You will be given eye drops to numb your eyes shortly before the procedure. You may feel mild pressure, but no pain. If your eyes are sensitive or dry after the surgery, we’ll prescribe drops to alleviate your symptoms during recovery.

What conditions can LASIK treat?

LASIK surgery is used to correct problems with myopia, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Most people have no need for glasses after this procedure.

How long does it take to see results from LASIK surgery?

Most people notice an improvement in their distance vision right after surgery. It may take a few days for you to get optimal results in visual clarity. There’s no guarantee you’ll have 20/20 vision from LASIK surgery, but you’ll certainly see a remarkable change in your vision.
